Jessi,
I'm not totally sure of this but it sounds that you have some conflict
between programs (not a virus). With many programs on present day
computers the number of permutations possible (conflict pairs) is high and
makes it very difficult to discover which cause the problem.
The prime culprit, in my opinion is Norton System Works and it's variations
and versions. They have been known to cause problems for some computers
(and also to slow operation). I suggest removing all references to any
Norton program (including all in the system registry) except for its
anti-virus program, which seems ok over years of use.
Then install a Norton System Works work-alike such as Fix-It Utilities (was
by On-Track and now owned by VCOM) which, in my opinion, does not cause
such incompatibilities. (I have no connection to this program except that I
have used it on my computers and it does a good job with no problems.)
Good luck with solving your problem.
John
