Echoing an earlier post, from my experience with 95, 98, 98SE, and XP Home,
I think the only solution to resource problems is to upgrade to XP or Win2K.
The amount of RAM doesn't matter (my SE machine has 384), and I use and like
MaxMem, but neither that nor any other products can address the problem of
poorly written programs that allow for memory leaks. MaxMem uses very
little in terms of resources (187 KB as I type this), while programs like
Outlook (currently using 24 MB), ZoneAlarm Pro (love the program but using
19 or 20 MB), IE 6, etc. do consume huge amount of resources. Further, my
experience has been that throughout the day of opening and closing Outlook
and IE, these two programs alone account (at least on my machine) with the
greatest memory leaks. Using ctrl-alt-del, see what's running in the
background, and use programs like StartMan, OptiX (sorry don't have links
handy), to see if all those programs running at startup are really needed.
For example, my Norton SystemWorks 2003 loads tons of stuff, and all I
really want are those associated with Norton Antivirus.

For my money, the best decision I ever made was switching my office machine
from 98SE to XP Home. The problem with resources is a thing of the past,
and I have literally not experienced any OS crashes since 11/01 when I
switched.

I also agree that ME is not really an upgrade but a giant patch for 98, and
from what I've read (but no direct experience), ME has been plagued with at
least as many problems as 98SE.

Wish I could be more encouraging.

Ed
