Unfortunately Peter, I've tried without success, the usual methods of fixing
this annoyance, including making sure that the
Tools\Options\View\RememberEachFoldersViewSettings box is checked.

That's why I thought perhaps the default folder opening size might be
settable via the registry.

Re your problem with the Detail View holding as a default in your XP,
perhaps you didn't see my post of a few months back, when I referred to a
little app called ViewFix, which works very well at ensuring that folders
open with the file-view setting the way you want.

I use this in both W98SE and XP and it does the job admirably. If you want
it, I'll send it to you.

Unfortunately, it doesn't regulate the window size.
