well... it all depends on how many "vulnerabilities" the hackers detect in win 98. in such a scenario you don't have the luxury of "MS patches/updates" and your system is sort of compromised...(taken control of??).

having said this, i should also point out that logically, such a scenario is very unlikely, because it is hardly worthwhile a hacker's effort to target a very small group of win 98 users.( compared to users of the many later versions like 2000, ME, xp etc.

so IMHO it should be ok if you are adequetely covered for spyware/malware/virus  and what not. wait for responses from others in the list
