Hi Marshall,
I run IE5 as well, and occasionally have the problem you mentioned. I don't
know what causes it, but I've always use Tweakui to fix it. ( Since you also
mentioned that you un-installed IE5, and still have the problem, I suspect
registry entry problems, but I'm guessing here. ). Either way, using the
'Repair Regedit' button on the 'repair tab' in Tweakui solves the problem
for me, and has never caused any 'other' known problems. After rebooting,
the problem is gone.
As an added note, I've also used the 'Repair System Files', and 'Repair
Associations' in Tweakui, and have never had any known related problems. HTH
