Linda, it would seem to be a modem on the way out. I had been suffering this
myself recently and by just turning the modem on and off a couple of times
it would behave again. After buying a new unit, the dropouts that had been
plaguing me on and off have been eliminated and now I can stay online all
day. If this is an older modem, it would be worth your while to get a new
one.

Regards,
Alan.

When I first turn my computer on in the morning or if I reboot it will
recognize my modem, but after it's logged on and downloaded mail a couple of
times I get this message -

Could not detect modem. It maybe in use, turned off, or not installed
properly.

I then have to reboot to get it to recognize it again. I receive a lot of
e-mail and have the computer set to log on, download my mail and then log
off every 30 minutes without my having to be at the computer. Now I have to
constantly check it.

Does this mean I need a new modem???

Thanks
Linda Aldridge
