Hi there,

COMPUTER IN QUESTION:
Gateway
LP Mini Tower
Model is GP6-400
Intel Pentium R II
Speed-400mhz
Front side Bus speed-mhz
cache ram-512mb
system memory-128 mb
phoenix bios 4.0 release 6.0
Manufacturer deate of 1998
2 hard drives of 13 gig on one ribbon ( master and slave)-approximately 1 gig on each hard drive is filled

I am running windows 98 se, I keep on the primary hard drive any programs that default there, and on the second hard drive I keep any programs that allow me to change the directory from defualt and put it in a folder on the second hard drive

PROBLEM:

An odd problem has developed right after I installed printers
One was an epson action laser 1500--which is in windows 98 list and
the other was a brother HL 1440-which
was not in list and was installed through the disk's auto run feature, since going through the add printer did not yeild an inf file that the windows would search for (only inf was the auto run).
Upon rebooting, all of a sudden I got error messages about fast find and OSA (I don't recall the exact message-can't find, can't start or soemthing)which are both office files. Now only occasionally the error does not appear. When it does not appear you do see those 2 files listed when you do the CTRL-ALT-DEL. 99% of the time when you boot the error occurs. When the error occurs I no longer can use other programs such as windows explorer, yahoo messneger--when you click then you get the program performed an illegal operation . Then more error messages start to come up such as msodll97, graph 8, osaintl.dll if you try to do anything. Now I have read that said just uncheck them from the start-up by going through msconfig, and that would solve start-up probelms. I uninstalled
the printers, but that did not resolve the issue. I tried to uninstall office thought add/remove programs (since I cound not find its own uninstller). It would not let me uninstall, rather it asked to insert the cd and it would run setup which then came back with many code # whaterver--file mnight be damaged, and you had to click ok oodles of times till you got to the end of it which then brought you back to the splash screen.
I had last formatted this machine over a year ago, so I decided to do an uncondtional format to both drives and reinstall everything. So my normal pattern is to install windows, then put in the restore disk for the drivers such as video, sound, modem. Then to install all programs that I have on floppies and CD's, then do any of the downloads of programs from the internet. So I did install some programs before I got to my office cd. Then installed that and then a few more and the error returned. Then I reformatted again, saved office for last, i
t happened again, then I reformatted again, put in office right after windows, and it happened again. Then I reformatted again and have put back everything but office so i am ok at this point. What is happening with my office? I even tried a different office disk, and tried both typical and custom installs with the same problem happening.

HELP please--i don't just want to uncheck it form the start-up. This is something new that has never had happen and still happnes after a clean install with the same programs, cd, floppies, and components of the machine that I have been using all these years. I would like to know a reason for this new behavior
This computer does not really get much use, just weekends really , and the internet conenction is dial-up to a university account from which I check email by telnetting into unix using pine, check hotmail and yahoo throught the avant browser, and use instant messengers. When not connected I predominantly use excel.

Just as an aside--If I was running windos xp, I know I would not be allowed to reformat and reinstall the operating system so much, so what would those people do?
