Check to see if you have "Confirm Conversion at Open" under
Tools-Options- General tab checked. Normally you would have this
*Un-checked*. If it is checked you may be getting a defaulted
"Recover Text at Open any file type" (or something like that) when
you open a Word document. This option strips non-text characters
from files automatically at open, which may be what your are seeing.
