Thanks for your help, Al.  I came across a similar idea in a PC mag
immediately after posting, but in this case they were explaining how to use
System File Checker.  So I went Start, Run, typed in sfc, and it found a
"possibly corrupted" file.  After restoring the file everything was fine.
