Chuck,

Using Word's help system to search for "no proofing" brought up some
interesting stuff but nothing to help with this problem.  BUT searching the
Word help system for the phrase
"set document to no proofing" revealed this little gem.

"To set the selected text to no proofing open the TOOLS menu and
select......"

SOoooo...
Try clicking TOOLS - LANGUAGE - SET LANGUAGE and see if it is set to NO
PROOFING
if it is, change it back to ENGLISH.

If that didn't solve it....
Is this the exact message?  "...the text is set to no proofing..."
or does it say PROOFING TOOLS NOT INSTALLED?
