This is exactly what I'm trying to do.

You could have a look at Album Express:
<http://www.fookes.com/album/index.php>
I use their Easy Thumbnails.

JAlbum:

I'm not sure, but does the included XP slideshow technology allow one to
burn the slideshow as a vcd? Also, I've been told that PowerPoint can do
this, and it's something I'm investigating.  Here's a tutorial:
<http://einstein.cs.uri.edu/tutorials/csc101/powerpoint/ppt.html>
Also, Open Source Office:

Anyway, this subject can be frustrating, when you look at all the stuff
that comes with cameras and scanners, etc, and then you find out it's just
a smattering of what you really want it to do. Sort of like dangling
carrots.

At least, that's been my experience.

Good luck, and I'd be interested to know what you eventually discover works
for you.

cheers,
Diane
