I have used Audacity for this very purpose.  There are other programs out 
there that do the same and maybe better but I have only used this one. It is 
free so it doesn't hurt to try it.

I have a computer with XP service pack II and one with Vista business and 
can use either one.
I have some 33 1/3rpm recordings on vinyl platters and wish to import a copy 
to my hard drive.  I previously used MusicMatch Plus but had a HDD failure 
and lost it and it is no longer available.  Does anyone know of a program 
that will import using "line-in" (from a turntable and an amplifier) and 
convert it to MP3, or another digital format?  Thank you. John
