This is "normally" true, but you have to keep in mind that the AV companies
are ALWAYS  BEHIND THE VIRUS WRITERS,
and there is always a time lag with any "protection" that AV will give you...
(They have to "notice" there is a virus, ID it, figure it out, write AND distribute
"protection updates" for it, etc...)

It has been said that a well written virus "could" infect the entire world in a
matter of hours...

PLUS, just because you know the person that sent an attachment,
(with spammers using better tricks), it is not necessarily from them.

So, there are no "easy answers"...
