James,
I, too, have been looking for a backup program that was free, easy to use and that would back up to a CD or CDRW. I tried many programs that were either too difficult to use, too buggy, or just plain awful until I stumbled upon Karen's Replicator, written by Karen Kenworthy. Karen is a programmer who wrote many fine articles for Windows Magazine and Wimmag.com for over a decade.
With Karen's Replicator you can automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network. Files larger than 2 GB are supported
. Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of file deletions.

Visit her website at
http://www.karenware.com/

When the page loads, choose "Free Programs" and then navigate to "Replicator".

I've been using the program now for about 6 months and just love it. I backup my data files automatically to a CDRW every Saturday morning at 6am. No fuss, no hastle.
Hope this is what you are looking for.
Regards,
Ted/
