John--
Is this a new computer? The way I've seen some new computers set up
lately, the people in the computer shops here ought to be *%@%#*-ed. They
seem to think you should have everything on your computer running at
startup, thus using up valuable resources.

You will probably find that most of these programs will be starting from
your Startup folder. Go to Windows/Start Menu/Startup folder. Remove any
icons you don't want running at startup. Check Properties for each one
first (right click) just to make sure they are shortcuts (they should all
be) and not the actual program (unlikely). Removing these entries won't
affect the programs, and you can always replace a shortcut back in the
folder later if you want.

Some programs may be running from the startup section of the Windows
registry. Removing these is not difficult, but will involve a little
simple registry editing. Or else you can get utilities such as StartEd to
do this.

Write back if you need more info.
