I'm sure this sounds reasonable to a lot of people, but the truth
is more like:
Since these are both huge, complicated programs built out of
components which have been worked on many a large number of people of
varied skill and experience, maintaining compatibility with past
versions of *themselves* is almost impossible, let alone versions of
other programs (including one another). Having both coded by people
who happen tow work for the same set of shareholders doesn't really
do much to reduce the complexity, or the difficulties to which it
gives rise.
