I ran into what appears to be this problem but if it is, you are looking
in the wrong place. I bought a retail McAfee Virusscan 4.0 to update my
old version for which the free one-year update had run out. It was
cheaper to buy a new retail version with rebate than upgrade the old
one. After installing it, I was told there was a newer version of the
engine and that I had to download the newer version to use newer virus
data files. I think this may be what it is referring to. They may want
you to download the newest version. This and any other engine upgrade
within the first year is free.

If this is not the case, you should be able to go to the Start button,
Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Software and remove the entry for
McAfee there. After doing this, find and delete the folders where
McAfee is installed (if they have not been removed) then reinstall the
new software.

I agree that McAfee's support leaves a lot to be desired. I was never
able to contact them with a problem I had with the software at one time.

Subject: [PCSOFT] McAfee Virus Scan

I would appreciate some help with this problem. Tech support seems to be
non-existent with McAfee unless I spend more dollars than I spent for
anti-virus software to get help with them. When I purchased a new HP
8570C computer it came with a free OEM McAfee Virus Scan. At the time I
bought computer< McAfee had a rebate offer with their Virus Scan making
it free. When I got home I installed the new one. I now know that I
should have removed the existing installed 3 month one. Now I get
warnings that it has expired & that I must purchase new one. The one I
have is good for a year. Can not get computer or McAfee to recognize
that this is installed. What do I do to uninstall the OEM one & get new
to work.
