I was thinking about this problem when I was reading some of the responses,
and it occured to me that it did not make sense that there was no obvious
switch for turning a feature like this on and off.  Then it struck me, the
obvious and simple answer.  The ink cartridge was empty!!!  My friend
changed the cartridge and all is well.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
