There are many possibilities. The first thing to try is an alternative
browser---that will tell you whether the fault is internal to Firefox (prob
disappears) or external (prob remains).
A few possibilities, more or less in order of likelihood, are:
1. ISP not updating its servers to keep up with customer demand. I have
read that some ISP's are no longer maintaining dialup services adequately.
2. Slow or overloaded servers at the other end. (Nothing you can do about
that, but unlikely in the case of Google)
3. Incorrect browser settings (eg Timeout too short, browser cache not
emptied regularly).
4. Incorrect or faulty modem settings.
5. Phone line or extension cord deteriorated.
I assume that you are not also experiencing disconnections--often these
problems go hand-in-hand, eg 5, and that you are using XP.
