On my Win98SE, with sound from motherboard, modem and a sound
card I go to Start-Settings-control panel-Multimedia-Audio and
change the setting from a drop-down box. It gives me the
choice
of all the devices capable of playing back (and farther down,
recording) on my system. When I click on the
sound card device, and then click apply, it restored the sound
icon in the system tray. Hope this helps.
