Myra, I haven't been following your thread. However, here is what you need
to do.

Type some or all of the paragraph the line will be below. The line will be
anchored to the paragraph for copy paste operations so you want to do that
first.

Put several blank lines under the paragraph.

Choose, Insert, Pitcure, AutoShapes, and a new toolbar will appear. (Or,
choose, View, Toolbars, and click Autoshapes.) Pick the first icon, it has
some curvey lines on it. Draw a flat horizontal line ABOVE the blank lines
beneath the paragraph. Left-click on the line, when you see the anchors at
the ends (which you can drag to change the line length), right-click, choose
format autoshapes, choose Colors and lines and use weight to set the line
thickness.
Choose Layoutt, click Advanced, and choose Text Wrapping, and choose 'Top
and Bottom'. You can specify how close the text can be to the line by using
the other settings in this window. Click okay, then using the mouse, click
beneath the line, and the cursor should move there. You can now type your
signee's name.

If you Still can't get below the line, (its because you didn't place it
ABOVE the blank lines I had you add), then right-click on the line, and DRAG
it up the page until it is above some text.

What causes the problem is if the line IS at the very end of the document,
you can never get below it by pressing enter, because the layout is
specifying that the line move with text (this is necessary so that you don't
accidently insert a lot of white space between the last paragraph and the
signature, not good for contracts), and so Word diligently maintains the
line's sacred position as being at the very end! To defeat this WORD
feature, you have to insert the line above the end, or drag it to a position
that is not the end of the document.

I am using MSWord '97., Windows XP. When I make a line with the drawing
device, shown as a slanted line on the bottom of the screen, I hit return,
and the
line moves down, not letting me type the name under it. When I hit the Shift
key and the underline , it makes a line, but then when I hit return, it
extends the line all the way across, into a line. Thanks for trying to help.
