when this was discussed several weeks ago, i think the consensus was that
there are freeware programs out there that can do this (i think the name of
is is More Properties?) but the easier and less space-consuming way to do it
would be NOT to create the folder on the desktop but to create a shortcut of
the folder onto the desktop.  then you can change the shortcut icon to
whatever icon you choose.
