Karen--
Bob's Wright, of course. I'd bet that "advice" came to you from your
computer manufacturer's tech assistance. It's an unfortunate fact of life
that "reformat and reinstall everything" seems to be the quick and easy
(for them) way of fixing everything. Manufacturers generally contract out
their tech assistance to outside specialist firms, so time spent in tech
assistance costs them money. Therefore the less time they can spend with
you, the better for them. Some are better than others in this regard.
Of course, it's difficult to argue with that advice, as reformatting will
indeed fix most problems. But it's rarely, if ever, the simplest or
quickest solution. Far better to look for other alternatives first, as
Bob has suggested.
For further help, we'd need to know a lot more details about your system,
and exactly what your problem is, and when it first started. It may not be
a problem, just a setting that you're missing.
