Thanks everyone for responding to this. Joe Drysdale sent me an answer privately yesterday about 10am he said

>From the DOS prompt......... type : scanreg /restore
you will be given a choice of the five copies saved in the previous five days.

About 2 hours after receiving his answer I was trying to load Microsoft Works 2000 on my computer and couldn't get it to
work. I reinstalled, still didn't work, some problem with a DLL file. I then uninstalled and resinstalled, still
didn't work. I'm sure a lot of you can relate to the rest of this story. I finally got disgusted with it and
uninstalled it only to find that my spell checker no longer worked in Outlook Express. It was tied to Outlook 98 which
was still working OK. So I reinstalled Outlook, didn't help, so of course I then uninstalled and reinstalled it.
Outlook was working fine but now Outlook Express, which I hadn't touched, would open and I could read e-mail but when I
tried to compose a new e-mail it told me that it was corrupt and I needed to reinstall it. AGHHHHHHHH I tried my CD and
of course since I upgraded to IE 5.01 the CD wouldn't let me reinstall because it was an earlier version. I was just on
the verge of trying to uninstall OE and download it from the web again when I remember the registry trick.

So thanks to Joe I restored my registry to the prior day and all was as it should be!!

Moral of this story - never think that your answer to someone's problem is too simplistic or that someone else will
answer with a better answer. I learn a lot by reading all the different approaches to a problem and this list has saved
me more than once.

It would be wise to also caution that restoring an old
registry is like taking a trip backwards in time.
Any software that was installed after that registry file was
originally saved, will no longer work. She would also
need to re-apply any configuration changes made in the
intervening time frame.

If she has changed hardware, there is also a slight chance
that the PC will not boot......
