Hi ,
This supplementary info may not answer Phil's question, but may be useful
to anyone looking for a no-cost alternative.
Microsoft provides several utilities for slide shows, some are included
in XP, others can be downloaded and used for free.
In addition to the slideshow feature of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
(included) see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/videos/managepics.mspx
there is the My Pictures slideshow as a screen saver, accessible through
the screensaver tab in Display Properties
(Actual location is C:\Windows\system32\ssmypics.scr ) (included)
CD Slide Show Generator (download)
With this PowerToy you can view images burned to a CD as a slide show.
The Generator works downlevel on Windows 9x machines as well.

Microsoft Photo Story 3 for Windows XP

Overview
Create slideshows using your digital photos. With a single click, you
can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures. Add stunning special effects,
soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then,
personalize them with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy
to send your photo stories in an e-mail. Watch them on your TV, a
computer, or a Windows Mobile?based portable device.
Windows Movie Maker 2.1 (included in SP2)
Supports still images > slide show effect.

Although I can't call myself a great fan of M$ , above utilities are
highly underrated especially Windows Movie Maker.
With some creativity you can create some very nice looking movies or
presentations.No need for expensive PowerPoint.
One caveat - XP does not support burning VCD or DVD,however the burning
software included with CD/DVD drives often supports that.
Vista includes the above software as well and supports DVD burning
