Java--Javascript. It's confusing enough for those who know. What chance
have we unwashed peasants, I ask?

Whatever it is you downloaded, chances are it's probably self-installing,
so you probably can now forget about it. If the download has anything that
looks like a "setup.exe" or "install.exe" , just run it and let it do its
thing.

Once it's installed, you don't need to activate it, whether it be
Javascript or Sun Java Machine. Except that in IE you have the options of
turning Javascript on or off. (See Robert's note).

I don't know if there ever was any connection between the names, or whether
it's just one of those unfortunate coincidences of a similar name for 2
entirely different things.
