This comment is in regards to some information Peter has added, but doesn't
directly the original topic.

Peter's reference to "mounted volumes" applies to Windows 2000 as well, but
it may be limited to NTFS partitions only.

The bug that he mentions about deleting files from a mounted volume is due
to the way the Recycle Bin works. You can delete files directly by holding
down the SHIFT key when deleting. This bypasses the recycle bin processing,
but also means the data is not retrievable.

We use this configuration on a W2K server deployment to a number of small
offices. The delete bug also serves as extra protection from well-intended
operators trying to clean up "unused" files on the computer. Since they
can't delete files, they are forced to call tech support to assist them and
we can prevent the accidental deletion of their main data files.

One other option you could use is that XP includes the ability to connect
additional drives as a folder in the directory structure of the original
drive. For example, if you have a folder named Documents where you keep all
of your document files, you could move all of the contents of the Documents
folder to the new drive and then mount the new drive as the Documents
folder. This would give you the full capacity of the new drive in the
Documents folder! This assignment is done through Disk Manager - access it
by going to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk
Management.

One caveat with a drive mounted as a folder. XP has a bug in it that will
prevent you from deleting any folders from a drive that is mounted this way.
