Our local Fry's Electronics has recently had special offers twice on a kit
sold under the name "Triton" to package up an IDE hard drive in an external
case via USB. It provides two more USB jacks on the front of the case, and
"card reader" slots for SD and CF flash cards, all for about $30 or so.

On the other hand, I recently got a good deal on a couple of gigabit fiber
NICs, so I can now copy fairly sizable data partitions from one box to the
other in an hour or two, or less.
