Well, it will be part of a network. "LAN" usually refers to
technologies limited to about 500 feet distance or less; a single
building or, at most, a campus.

I happen to like AtGuard.
Whether it would have to be installed on both machines depends on
how they are networked. If they're on a hub with the cable modem,
then each as its own address and needs its own protection. But if
the PC connected to the cable modem uses two NICs, and runs some
software that translates addresses, then only this "gateway" machine
needs to be protected.
