Peggy,

Somehow you managed to save a new copy of the Normal (default) template
file with some text in it.  You need to delete the current version of the
template.

Use the Windows Explorer and go to
....\MS Office\Templates and delete the file called NORMAL.DOT.

Now open Word, it will build a new template without all the text.  As soon
as Word finishes all it's opening "routines" immediately exit it to save
the new template.

All done.
