This sounds like what happens when a mail transmission is not completed.
It gets the mail once (or many times), but never "remembers" it got it, so it
continues to get it until it "remembers". (When I say "remembers", I mean
marks it "used" or picked up...)

One seting might help, it you have it.  Set the mail program to remove the mail
from the servers, (unless you have other reasons you can't or don't want to do that).
That should help, since once it finishes properly it will delete the mail from
the server and that pretty much makes it impossible to get again...
