If you have a complex background, an easier method would be to invert your
selection and then hit the delete key to file the entire selection with your
current background color.  Note that this will only work if you are NOT
using a transparent background (i.e. layer 0).  Hope this helps...

Make sure that black is the foreground color in the tools pallet. . . click
on the paint bucket and then click on the part that you want to be
background. . . .you may have to click more than once, but the background
will then become black.
