There are some utilities that will clear all the "stuff" from the Start
menu (such as Run commands, Recently used documents, etc.).  One of these
is X-Setup (you can search to find the free download)

The easier way is when you are typing the start of a file name and the drop
down box appears, highlight the item you want to delete using the down
arrow (or just moving your mouse over it - do not click it) and press the
"Delete" button on the keyboard.
