Greetings--
The best option I can think of for a free word processor, database, spreadsheet, and presentation suite is OpenOffice.org. The file formats are compatible with MSOffice, and can be set to use them by default. It is free and continues to evolve and improve.
It is a hefty download, but, if you are on a broadband connection (and have sufficient hard disk space, of course), that should not be a problem.
