A CRC error has to do with a mis-matched check digit at the end of a block
of data that was received or sent by your modem. The software detects this
error and resends, the block. If you are having a large number of CRC
errors then there is noise on your line and your overall transmission will
be slow.

CRC works as follows:

I send data 852963741, the sum of the digits is 45. The modem software
will transmit 8529637415, which is an EXTRA digit. The software at the
receiving end will sum the first nine digits in the block and compare the
ones digit to the last digit received. If things don't match, you have a
CRC error and the block is retransmitted.

If you have numerous errors, either you have a bad connection and it is a
telephone line problem or you have a bad modem or the people you dial into
have a bad modem. Numerous in this case would equate to the modem
downloading at speeds significantly below the speed at which it is
connected. CRC errors can be generated at any point during transmission so
the more HOPS the connection has to make between you & the other end the
higher the possibility of an error occurring.

A 1MB file on a modem running at 56K, should take it a perfect world
1,000,000 x 10 / 56,000 seconds to download = 3 minutes. Assuming neither
system is doing anything else and all blocks transmit without error. If
50% of the data needs to be re-transmitted due to errors, then the download
would climb to 4 1/2 minutes. If 10 people are trying to download the file
at the same time, then the download could be 30 minutes What percentage of
the data needs to be re-transmitted? is the real question.

sorry to be so wordy its the teacher in me ;)
