All the others are excellent suggestions, but one thing that gets
forgotten is your screen saver. It doesn't show in the list (at least
for me) when you do a CTRL-ALT-DEL, so it often gets missed.
To shut it down, right click anywhere on the desktop (that isn't
covered by an icon), and choose properties from the menu. On the
Screen Saver tab, you'll find a drop down box listing the screen
saver(s) you have. Using the scroll bar next to it, find "none," then
hit ok, and you should be able to get through scandisk and defrag
without having to listen to Windows "whine" about it. *G*
