What you are describing sounds like formatting marks, the paragraph symbol in particular.

There should be a tool bar button that resembles that mark. If you click it, the marks will disappear. In any case, as you've noticed, they do not appear in the printed copy. It can be useful to display them in order to help correct formatting errors.
