My isp treats it as a virus and quarantines it, so I don't EVEN think about
opening one.

You are correct, NEVER download any EXE file from an email.

Whenever you receive something that "may": be from a source (ie
Microsoft) go to the source's WEBSITE and check the information.  And if
there is a download then download from the WEBSITE not from an
attachment in your original email.
