<<< This problem is documented at microsoft.com and gives a fix, #831167>>>

" • You cannot log on to a Web site or complete an Internet transaction, or you receive an HTTP 500 (Internal Server Error) Web page
(831167) - Fixes a problem that may prevent you from logging on to a Web site or completing an Internet transaction after you install the 832894 (MS04-004) security update.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831167 "

The above is the gist of url:--

 http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?catalog=LCID%3D1033&query=Q831167&x=12&y=6

regarding security update "832894 (MS04-004)" mentioned in the above gist

the same url reads " • MS04-004: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
(832894) - Windows XP322389 How to obtain the latest Windows XP service packTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832894 "

so IMO you need to check whether you have the "latest win XP service pack" by browsing the article in " http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832894 "

<<< I
downloaded the file separately and tried to install through add/remove but then
I get a
box that says I need IE6 sp1 to install>>>

as far as I know windows updates install themselves and i am not sure whether they can be installed through " add/remove" feature

<<< I'm thinking I need to uninstall then reinstall IE6. I haven't done that
before and thought IE was intricately intertwined with the XP OS.>>>

you are right and in fact IE CAN NOT BE UNINSTALLED IN ANY VERSION OF WINDOWS.

all that can be done is either " repair" or revert to an earlier version than what you have.

HTH and good luck---Venkat Viswanathan
