Resolved ! - Thanks to everyone who responded but unfortunately nothing
worked except the following "Gem" I found

Download a programme called Backup MyPC from
http://download.com.com/3000-2242-10118289.html
Note that you only get a 30 day trial free.
Once you have installed it follow the instructions below - it works a treat.

Start the program and get past the popup windows.  Then, go to the Restore
panel and under "restore from" select "file".  Then go to "tools" at the top
and select "catalog import".  Find the backup file and you should be ready
to restore your files.  You have to wonder where Microsofts head is at
sometimes when they miss something as obvious as this one.  Good luck all.
