The key is linked to the hardware setup. If you make changes in your
hardware, at some point it will require new activation. How much of a change
will trip it is not clear. If you do get prompted to re-activate, you will
need to call Microsoft by phone since online activation will no longer work.
If you do make many changes to the hardware fairly often, you can expect to
be making lots of calls to Microsoft registration center! It is rather a
pain.
