To which I'd add:
There's an even more important reason not to put folders into your desktop.

Desktop is itself a folder within Windows.

Thus, if you ever have trouble with Windows which might necessitate
deleting and reinstalling Windows anew, unless you remember to save the
Desktop folder, you'll lose the entire contents of all folders and anything
else residing on your Desktop.

I learnt that the hard way!  The moral of the story is: don't leave
anything important on your desktop---use shortcuts only, and keep important
stuff out of the Windows folder.
