In theory, Java is SUPPOSED to be safe and not able to damage your computer.
If that is correct, then running Java applets should be safe. So it depends
on whether you want to place your trust in Sun Microsystems. Are they more
reliable than Microsoft as far as security is concerned?
Personally, I don't worry about it a lot, but then again, I don't have full
confidence in the safety of Java either.

Security settings allow choice pf scripting of Java applets - Disable,
Enable, Prompt.
I usually select prompt, but don't know if that's too conservative, and if
it may interfere.
