Hi Rob,

Used together, yes. But not actively running (open) at the same time. Once
installed, updated and any preferences or settings customized, Spyware Guard
and Startpage Guard work in the background. Spyware Blaster does not have to
remain running in the background.

SpyBot and Ad-aware are on call, so to speak. When you want to check your
system, then you check for updates and run them individually to see if they
find anything that slipped by the above defense. The latest version of
SpyBot, 1.3, also has a feature (SpyBot-S&D Resident) that runs in the
background. Why use Both? Both are excellent programs but since they are
different, at times one will detect something the other doesn't. Protection
is like memory... if the system will take it and there are no conflicts, you
can't have "too much".

These programs are compatible with each other and as far as I know, don't
conflict with other programs such as anti-virus, firewalls, etc.

The term "browser hijack(ing)", as normally used, does not imply that the
browser itself has been hijacked, but rather a part of it. Examples are your
home page setting, the search engine used, when a browser helper object
(BHO) has been added, etc. The hijacking occurs when this takes place
without your knowledge or consent.

I have no experience with PestPatrol, SpyHunter, or any program that offers
to scan your system then tells you that in order to remove what it found,
you must purchase the program. I'm sure they are effective to some degree
but, again, no one program that I'm aware of will completely protect you. I
simply prefer to use the free ones that do an excellent job of protecting
me. I do as much surfing, if not more than, the average user and I have no
problems using the programs mentioned.

I hope this clarifies it a bit. Good luck and stay "germ" free...

Should all 5 be used together? If so, any interactions? And instead of or in
addition to Pest Patrol?

Also, did I hear/read correctly that browsers are getting hijacked, or is it
just start pages?

Rob

Hi Annie,

It sounds as though you have a computer full of spyware / malware that not
only found it's way onto your computer but Pest Patrol failed to detect it
also. I suggest you try the following free programs:

SpywareGuard
http://wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Startpage Guard
http://www.pjwalczak.com/spguard/

SpyBot Search & Destroy
http://tinyurl.com/btf8

Ad-aware SE Personal Edition 1.03
http://tinyurl.com/yu6cm

No one program is 100% effective, but the first three do a good job of
protecting you from getting the "bad guys" and the last two work together to
detect and eliminate any that do get past your defense.

You didn't mention having a third party firewall. I suggest you disable the
firewall in XP and use ZoneAlarm http://tinyurl.com/kzq. The free edition
will serve you well and prevent the bad guys from using the Internet to
"call home". XPs firewall doesn't do that.

Good luck...

Subject: [PCSOFT] Slow Internet

I have a Dell Computer with Windows XP on it. I've been having problems
with my internet. It runs very slow, or we can't get on it or if we do
get on then it kicks us off the internet or it just freezes. We have
Norton AntiVirus installed, although all of a sudden the AutoProtect is
not working; it's not enabled and when I try to enable it - it won't
work. I also have Pest Patrol which I run daily. My daughter has AOL
instant messaging programmed on the computer so I'm not sure if this is
the problem. Plus we get an awful lot of porn on the computer. Any
suggestions with the internet?

thanks

Annie Bradley
