it probably is your screen saver.  but don't bother deactivating it --
here's a great trick i learned:

when you begin scandisk, defrag, virus scan, or any other long operation,
click on the start menu and leave it popped up -- as long as it's like that,
the screen saver doesn't come on, and you don't have to worry about
reactiving the screen saver later.  just turn off your monitor while these
run, to prevent burn-in.
