Hi Karen,

You are probably referring to Steve Gibson's "Shoot The Messenger". You can

You can also disable Messenger Service manually. You don't mention your 
operating system but the instructions for NT / 2000 / XP users are here. 
Messenger Service in Windows 98 / Millennium cannot be disabled:

I may have asked this question before, but for some reason, I can't find the 
answer anywhere.  I know that you can get rid of Messenger Service pop-ups 
through a program, but I can't find the program, so I need 
help--PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
