Lew,

These types of spyware cannot install if you have an adequate defense.  If
you have Zone Alarm installed and configured correctly then you must have
inadvertently downloaded the spyware yourself. If you don't have Zone Alarm
installed, get it and install it ASAP. (It's free!)

Spybot is good but not always perfect. If you can afford to, add some other
spyware stoppers like Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster and Spy Sweeper. Also
use a registry cleaner to find and remove any parts of the offending
spyware. (Note the file names and directories involved and jot them
down.)  Norton, System Mechanic and Fix-It all have registry cleaners and
there are standalone cleaners out there. (Do a "Google" to find them.)
