The main thing is to get a "Voice" modem, which has capability to pass the
audio to the PC. All (at least retail versions) of the voice modems have
more than adequate "answering machine" function software, usually in both
Win 95 and NT versions. Some have "voice mail" type functions with voice
mailboxes for different individuals and menu driven functions (i.e., press
"1" for ..., etc.). Almost all (if not all) also can detect the FAX tone,
or digital data tones also and switch to that mode if not a voice call.
The only problems that I have encountered are with programs that are not
compliant with all of Windows telephony api's. They can't acquire control
of the phone line while the answering software is running (Juno is one
example), and you get the message that the modem is "in use".
