Hello Dave,

Here are two programs that appear to fit the bill. Good luck on your
project:

Process Viewer (Windows NT, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP

Process Explorer 8.20

Subject: [PCSOFT] Win 98SE Performance "deslugging"

I've been rebuilding a Windows 98 SE[*] box, and installed Norton
ANtivirus 2003 on it. Suddenly, it crawls, especially toward the end of the
boot process.
It appears that if I terminate ccApp.exe, the Norton auto-protect task,
that gets rid of the problem. Of course, it also gets rid of the auto-
protect....
I use this version of Norton on several other PCs, some of which are also
running 98 SE, and I have not seen this behaviour before. I don't think
it's anything to do with the certificate issue that has recently been
discussed, but perhaps there's a wrinkle I'm overlooking.

Even if it does turn out to be that, I'll want to do some performance
monitoring and tuning on the system. I've already done the obvious things,
with a fixed-size FAT16 swap partition, DMA enabled on the hard drive, set
the type as "Network Server", maximum read-ahead and hardware acceleration,
and so on.
But the NT/2K Task Manager has spoiled me. I want to see which processes
are taking how much CPU, RAM, etc -- and the tools I've got currently are
not up to the task.

So if you know of such a tool -- especially if it's cheap or, better yet,
free -- please recommend it to me. Or if you've found an obscure tip,
something I might be likely to have overlooked. that's good too.

Dave Gillett

[*] There's been much discussion here in the past about Microsoft's
announcement that they would discontinue support and critical updates for 98
SE as of Jan 16th. I see, just today, that they have bowed to popular
demand and will be continuing support until 2006.
