The harddrive controller writes to the surface of the harddrive
many times with a different set of complex patterns to try to
"exercise" the magnetic medium enough that nothing is remaining
as a "residual" of the original data no matter how deep the recovery
process might try to go into the surface of the media.
A secure Wipe might be achieved with as *few* as seven passes...
The more the better, but it takes a lot of time...
The really secure alternative is to destroy the drive...
